Our office strives to stay current as advances in dental technology occur. Four areas that directly affect your child’s dental care are: digital intraoral x-rays, digital panoramic x-rays, diagnodent caries detection, and digital intraoral cameras.
Digital panoramic x-rays
Panoramic x-rays
allow the dentist to view all the developing primary and permanent
teeth plus surrounding bony structures.
A computer generated picture
is usually taken at age 6 to view permanent tooth development and
again at age 17 to view developing wisdom teeth.
Digital intraoral x-rays
In an effort to drastically reduce the time of exposure to x-ray radiation we replaced our film based system. We now use computer generated digital x-rays that require ¼ the amount of radiation that film x-rays require. Digital x-rays can be instantly viewed on our 20x16 computer screen. This large screen format gives the parents, patient, and dentist an opportunity to easily view and discuss tooth development, growth and dental abnormalities.
Diagnodent laser technology
Dentists have used “explorers” (little picks) to identify cavities since the 1800’s. In the mid 1990’s a small laser was developed that can detect a cavity in a tooth by reading biofluorescences. This device gives us the ability to detect cavities when they are very small and much easier to fix.
Digital intraoral camera
For years we have had parents “peek” into their child’s small mouth as a cavity or special area of interest is identified. Most of the time this was a quick, and possibly inaccurate, look at best. Now, with the aide of a tiny digital camera, you can see your child’s tooth on a computer screen. You can easily see exactly what the dentist sees.
